Recruitment

Go to Van's house and back him up when he tells the landlady that you're going to get the Frozen Flame. After that, tell him that you were serious about finding it, and he'll join after a short scene. Take him to meet his other-world father, who gives Van a bigger piggy bank. You can then go to his real home, inspect the piggy bank, and put gold inside to power up Van's lv 7 tech.
